And It Begins
It took a while to get here...
It’s taken me a while to get here. The Way Back Machine tells me I started in 2010. I was still in my 20’s. If I could combine my knowledge now with the energy then I would be off to such a great start today, but we work with what we have.
The photo above has nothing to do with Ebb Point, but it’s the catalyst to the journey. This Substack exists because in 2024 I really wanted beignets in New Orleans and I got into my car and drove there to get them. Along the way a short story I wrote in 2022 kept running its way through my mind. Fast forward to driving through the desert with a friend in 2025 and Ebb Point was born. Well, the idea for Ebb Point was born, the title came to me while watching Keanu Reeves on stage during Waiting for Godot. What has this led to?
2025, into 2026, meeting with people and talking about the film. Meeting crew and actors. Learning the most important thing was the budget and that securing that wouldn’t be as easy as a refinance. The advice given is, “go for it, just don’t use your own money.” Are we really just a city filled with hopefuls asking people for money and wishing for the best? That’s what this town is built on? We are a desert with a water view basically pulling on the slot lever and hoping for the best? This is where we are.
I updated everyone about the latest on my film by posting on my Millennial Gaze page, but every time I wrote a new piece I felt like a fraud. How could I write about wanting to work on my passion project, while simultaneously posting about politics and daily life activities? That’s when it hit me, I have to dedicate a page to it.
Ebb Point, a film about an immortal Tongan woman that must return to Nuku’alofa every century or so to recharge. In the present day, she sets out on her next trip with a new friend facing his own mortal story, and she wonders if she wants to go on or if this is the swan song.
That’s how its done. You spend over a decade writing half-hour comedies you hope will land, and a drive across the country gives you an idea for a drama that explores mortality and purpose.
More to come down the road, until then, I will continue to work on this page. Thanks for reading.
